The first Lithuanian satellites were lunched into the space

After several times takeoff was delayed, today rocket Antares rosed to the sky.„Orbital Sciences“ Corporation has begun its first commercial re – supply mission to the International Space Station.
The spacecraft “Cygnus” will carry 1,2 tons of cargo to the International Space Station (ISS). Weighing 400 kg loads consist of scientific equipment and experiments. Among them – live ants, various bacteria and another 2 kilograms – the first Lithuanian satellites “Lit Sat – 1” and “Lituanica Sat – 1”. Their authors are from Kaunas University of technology and Vilnius University.
The next part of the load consists of food and household goods required to live in the ISS for the astronauts. Also goods for the space station to maintain and upgrade equipments.

In the loads every astronaut will find a small surprise for yourself” – in the press conference was joking Frank Culbertson, vise president of the company "Orbital Sciences". He assured that the astronaut’s surprise – is old American tradition in the space industry. Gifts astronauts really deserved because they spent working in an open space in the Christmas holidays. Because of the stations cooling system failures. That’s why rocket did not take start for the fist time in late December.
Cygnus carried student’s experiments. They will investigate the movement of the sphere, fluid dynamics and capillary phenomena in zero gravity conditions. It can help to develop new antibiotics, it was transported 120 species. To monitor the behavior of ants and draw conclusions about changes the brain performance in the space.
Zero gravitation lets proliferate cells and bacteria in all directions equally. It allows scientists to create products that would be impossible on Earth.
With two Lithuanian satellites, Cygnus caring other 30. This is the biggest small satellites mission in history.
During 15 years of the International Space Stations operation were conducted over 1,500 microgravity, biology, physics, earth observations and educational experiments.ISS will run until 2024.The station serves six astronaust crew from the United States, Russia, Europe and Japan.
If the cargo from the Earth to the International Space Station will be delivered successfully, then there astronauts will begin to monitor the cosmic traffic – various satellites, other equipment or space debris. Thousands of them orbiting around the Earth orbit. Once it will be determined that space is safe – a huge robotic arm controlled by Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata will launch satellites in orbit around the Earth(25-28 February). They should fly about 6 months before they fall to the ground.

Mission objectives – to test silicon solar cells, inter-connection, space navigation tools, to capture the International Space Station, the Earth.

Radio communications fans can connect to them. Satellite has a camera, it will take pictures, but I am not sure that it will be suitable for the spaying.
The first satellite was launched in 1951, by the Soviet Union and its weighs 80 kilos. It seems that coming time for the small satellites.

Lithuania will be the new member in the space exploration.
