Lithuania celebrated Mardi Gras

Image
Kids from Kaunas Valdorf school at the celebration  Lithuania celebrated Mardi Gras (Uzgavenes it is Lithuanian name) on Tuesday. What kind of celebration it is ? Mardi Gras is a traditional winter festival, which aims to banish the winter.   This is one of the funniest celebrations for me. It is not just a Lithuanian festival , it is celebrated in other European countries. Clearly it is more rural cultural phenomenon , but usually is celebrated in the cities. Immediately after Mardi Gras begins Lent and fasting time . Celebrations participants dress up , it is important to use non-routine clods. Faces are concealed by masks , which is constructed of paper, cardboard or wood . All the most important players in the Mardi Gras were taken from daily rural environment . Usually masks had old, ugly human traits. Usually man liked to dress as woman , and women – often as men . The people depicted and mythol...

How serious is another gas war?

Image
Taken from asgbielsko.lenart.pl The problem arose between  two countries, Ukraine and Russia. This problem is not new. The fact is that Ukraine last year consumed less gas and therefore they planing less to buy from Russia. They had to buy gas  more, by prior arrangement. According to the 2009 agreement  between Gazprom and Naftogaz, Ukraine has to buy from Gazprom at 52 billion. cubic meters of gas per year.  Ukraine bought  only 32.9 billion. cubic meters of gas last year. Can you imagine dear reader, that in order to shop in the supermarket, you will need first  to sign contract with a supermarket. In t hat contract it will be told, that you will be able to shop, but you know, you have to spend not less than 100 U.S. dollars, either you are not welcome. Well if I am very hungry and not very prudent, I can sign a contract. But at least in the western world such agreements exist, or not? I'm staying Lithuanian themselves and a...

Can the new Baltic airline company outrivel SAS or Norwegian?

Image
Lithuanian Prime Minister A.Butkevicius during his stay in Estonia in 2013 january, said that it would be interesting for the all three Baltic countries to have their own airline company. "I propose the creation of aviation company to carry out a joint project and be able to financially survive, because of having the airline, which, for example, can work profitably only in Lithuania - it is hardly imaginable." Spoke A.Butkevicius.   Lithuania had the aviation company, not too long ago, that went bankrupt. It should be noted that both Latvia and Estonia have their own airlines. But both of them are unprofitable. Latvia is  looking currently for a strategic investor in loss-making airlines "airBaltic". With the growing losses of "Estonian Air" also started discussions in Estonia on "Estonian Air"'s future. It is not clear what  expect Butkevicius, because Latvians certainly will not  establish another company, having considerable trouble w...

LNG terminal in Klaipeda

Image
Suppressing Lithuania 's energy independence project in Visaginas ,for  Lithuania  the situation is much more difficult at the present. It become important to continue work on LNG terminal in Klaipeda . What is an LNG ? LNG terminals have four main functions: Receiving LNG tankers and unloading their cargo Storing LNG in cryogenic tanks able to withstand temperatures below -160°C Degasifying LNG to meet demand Feeding gas into the national transmission network. The LNG is stored in double-walled insulated tanks to limit boil-off. These tanks are able to withstand the temperatures of below -160°C needed to keep the gas condensed in a liquid state. The outer walls are made of pre-stressed reinforced concrete or steel. However, the newly elected government does not show much enthusiasm for large projects. However, there is hope that at least the LNG terminal will appear .  The European Union decided to support Finland in the adequat...
